Dinner:
My friend wanted to know how to make Pasties.
My mom was an orphan, but spent many years as a teen in a Mennonite bakery. When my dad took her home to meet his mom, (my grandmother was born and raised in Wales), this was what they bonded over. Grandmothers Pasties Recipe.
My mom made them about every two weeks, she wrapped them in wax paper and froze them. To be re-heated in oven, on cold rainy days.
I make them from memory.
But this is an ok recipe.

Yes. My mom. I have spoken of here before. She was an orphan of the Russian revolution, adopted by a tyrannical Austrian banker who immigrated to America in 1926. He lost everything in 29. My mom ran away at 13. (yep, abuse). She was rescued by a mennonite community, where she learned love and hard work. Ran off at 18 with a barnstormer, who taught her to fly. She moved to NYC, and got a degree in anthropology. Supporting her self by being "a lady of the night". Later raised 4 radicals kids.
I could talk about my mom all day.
When my mom was living with a Mennonite community she worked every day in a communal bakery run by the women for the whole village each one very strong women who instilled in her a sense of belonging and a sense that she could do anything. This healed her. To her dying Day her favorite songs were Mennonite hymns. She never became religious nor joined any church, but she knew the value of community, and the women who run it.
