@elizabethwathigo I'm new here, too, but I've found that if you post stuff and respond to people, you'll generally get some kind of interaction in return. The people have so far been really nice and I certainly feel welcomed! I'd say just jump in with both feet - post an introduction and reply to stuff you find interesting. And welcome aboard!
