Here's a thought, strategic, even:
Rs hold a new vote in caucus, make McCarthy their nominee.

Some of the caucus decides to vote "present" and throws the Speakership to the Dems.
McCarthy is already damaged goods, and this way Scalise and Jordan can say that THEY did not lose the speakership to the Dems, only McCarthy did.
Now, they would still have the ability to hold things up. For now. But they could claim bipartisanship.
It's gonna be a long week....
