Read The Hobbit when I was 12, thought it was a fun kids’ story. Later read LOTR about same time The Silarilluon was published.
I still love the moral at the end about war coming all the way home to one’s doorstep. And redemption; forgiveness. BUT: Will never forgive Peter Jackson for the last movie omitting basically all that.

Another series that we kids consumed was Susan Cooper’s The Dark Is Rising, way before Harry Potter. Stay far far away from the US film, it is absolutely heinous
