You can't delete your twitter account, that option isn't really there. You can only deactivate the account.

If it stays deactivated for 30 days then the user name is released for somebody else to use (nic-jacking), but the data remains on the twitter servers.

Lock it and leave it dormant. So you can't be nic-jacked.

To lock down your twitter account...

Click the More button.
Click Settings and Support.
Click Settings and Privacy.
Click Privacy and Safety.
Click Audience and Tagging.
Click the box to put a blue check in Protect Your Tweets box.
