Highlight of three days camping in Dosewallips State Park: a herd of elk slowly rambling in to graze, one by one settling down to chew their cud, almost within spitting distance. An 11-year-old girl there with us was afraid they would charge, and to be fair I wouldn't want to tangle with anything that big with hooves and antlers -- but after repeatedly moving to go she settled down and watched them, charmed. There were mares, young bucks, an 8-point stag, and a couple of nursings.
