The selection of a vice-presidential candidate often depends on very intangible (though still substantial) factors that involve the presidential candidate's comfort level with the person and something I can only call "synergy"; the extra boost that comes when the two candidates build each other up and reveal the best in the other.
Ticket balance, number of electoral votes, regional appeal, play some rôle but more in ruling candidates out than in ruling them in.

@DavidSalo Here’s my bet: no one will be named before the convention, and probably as late as possible then. All our fevered speculation is free publicity, and as soon as it gets resolved it'll be replaced by more internecine bickering.
