I want to know how deer communicate. I know they use head bobs when in a group, and hoof-stomps with huffing when threatened. But all the rest is silent and subtle.

How does the mother tell the fawn to stay put while she goes off, sometimes for days? Or tell the fawn to follow her? Or any of the other messages necessary for survival or even pleasure?

There’s so much that humans can’t perceive. We have a lot to learn, or be amazed at.

@CJLavoie We had a baby fawn in our front yard once or twice last year. Its mom came up our driveway and made a soft, brief sound very like a cow lowing; baby responded with a calf-like bleat, again soft and short. I don't think either would have been audible more than twenty feet away.
