Just wrapping up today's newsletter, but I keep coming back to this statue and chuckling.
This is a depiction of Thucydides - but take a look at the pose chosen for immortalization.
If someone were going to make a statue of you...
a) what pose would you prefer to be in; and
b) what pose would be more accurate to how you lived your life? 👀
I'd like to steal @awnaves cartwheel idea. It's my one and only superpower, and it should be remembered.
I also want to comment on Thucydides' person and wardrobe, if I may.
1. Nice sandals. Solid. Flattering.
2. I fear his robe or sheet will fall off if he stands up.
3. I don't really fear that, because he looks like he works out.
4. What's that tie or bit of fabric hanging down his chest?
1. Great opening remarks. Start with high praise!
2+3: Then start leering at the very dead man. Very nice. 😂
4. It's very faint, but you can see the thinnest band of fabric crowning his head from other angles. Although many clothing designs in history books for the era are much more elaborate, men would often wear a simple band of cloth around their locks. You're seeing the tail of that here, methinks!
5. Perv on, my friend. :) What else is history for?
Oh, but you misunderstand me! I neglected to mention it in my opening remarks, but he is in fact not my type because of the slouch. I simply cannot bear a man with a slouch! And now that I know about his hair piece, I fear I must demur. He has certain qualities I simply cannot tolerate in stone statue. In fact, I detest all stone statues, and I will no longer associate myself with them.
Faithfully yours,
Gwendolen
