@grapho only best picture films I've seen: Return of the King, Forrest Gump, Gandhi, Amadeus, Rain Man, A Man for All Seasons, Sound of Music, The Apartment, Around the World in 80 Days.
did they feel truly 'best-picture-worthy' to you? it's interesting to see which ones were NOMINATED but didn't win in a given year. sometimes i like those runner-ups as much, or better.

do you ever use rottentomatoes.com? i like it for the very reason you discuss: they distinguish clearly between what the CRITICS think and what VIEWERS think.
so, for example, the current robot/horror movie M3GAN has a 94% score from the [aggregated] reviews, and a 79% score from viewers. i think that's fairly typical on that site – and, as you indicate, in the real world.
