Oh my fucking god! A skunk just exploded in my backyard. The back door was open and now the kitchen is a chemical gas disaster. Even in the living room where I'm sitting now, i'm having to breathe through my mouth!

@GlennS i wish i knew a remedy! i live with them around but haven't had such a close encounter.
@peeppeepcircus we get em all the time since our burb is surrounded by woods and is also full of semi-feral cats. The skunks, cats, and raccoons seem to be at war.
i was thinking of something with vinegar and baking soda as a remedy, but i found this about adding hydrogen peroxide.

@GlennS leaving bowls of vinegar around makes sense to me. that stuff is magic.

@peeppeepcircus my wife was in the kitchen so she slammed the door immediately and then raced to the front door to close that too. Her quick reflexes may have spared us the worst of it.
@GlennS oh no. I am not even sure how you get rid of that smell. I hope it does not last long.
@dawnyriver it usually goes away after half an hour to an hour but it's actually inside this time. I'm going to have to wait for it to clear outside and then open up the doors and windows and hope for a strong breeze.
@GlennS I have a friend who says to put bowls of vinegar out, he says they even used to use vinegar for getting the smell out of the house after smoking skunky weed. There's also a deodorizing spray called canabolish, it's made to get rid of the smell of pot, but chances are it will help with the skunk smell too if you find that it's lingering. Good luck!
@nonayadambidnes good info, thanks! i think we got lucky.A big thunderstorm washed away the smell outside. The porch still smelled skunky, but we opened the doors, front and back and the window upstairs and managed to catch a breeze. I think my wife's quick reflexes on shutting everything closed and the storm, combined, kept a potententially bad situation under control
