I wish there had been vaccines when I was young. I was recovering in hospital after a tonsillectomy that led to a hemorrhage, and got measles in the ward. Hospital sent all the kids home. I laid in a dark room at home. Measles led to pneumonia. The treatment was carrying me in for antibiotic and vitamin K shots. Three months until I could return to school a couple days a week. I was a lucky one. Vaccines save lives.

@TheresaVermont Gosh, you were so sick!

The dark room. As I recall, that meant German measles. I had them and regular measles, and mumps. With German measles, I remember Mom said the room had to be darkened. With the mumps, no men would come near me. Dad's friend Sam came by the house. He came to my bedroom door and said hi and hoped I would feel better.

So maybe I didn’t get the vaccines. In middle school, twice, I think, they lined us up for shots.

@GeezerWench You know, we were poor people that didn't get a lot medically. Relied on folk lore, and. the lore for measles of any type was dark room. Parents were afraid.

@GeezerWench Ah, the memory bank. I remember being told that if it was 3 day measles, it was the bad one, and 8 days was the OK. The problem being you didn't know which one you had until day 4 or 5. So you expected the worst.
