Where I lived in Louisiana was probably too wet for them. We had snakes, lizards, and Palmetto bugs. Thankfully, I didn't SEE any snakes.
I was told, when you go fishing in the bayous, you take your rod, reel, tackle box, bait, and a .45.
The .45 is for when snakes drop in the boat.
