Didn't know there were so many versions of #ClamChowder. I just knew about New England and Manhattan.
@grayman That's my understanding, pretty much.
Chowders are thick and creamy.
Iβd try any of those as long as they didnβt have clamsβ¦?
@ATXJane I'm pretty sure chicken would work in the creamy ones. Maybe beef in the red ones or the clear broth ones.
Excellent suggestions! Thank you.
@ATXJane From what I've read about these chowders, the creamy white ones are basically a white sauce (bechamel, I think the word is), that stuff is added to.
I don't see why you couldn't use half white sauce, half broth, cubed potatoes, and then whatever you want. Celery, onions. Beans instead of meat to make it vegetarian.
I don't know what vegan milk would work with that. Maybe a nut milk?
@ATXJane ha ha, that's funny. I'd try roast beef if it wasn't roasted or beef....lol
@ATXJane Same. π€·ββοΈ @GeezerWench
@ATXJane Maybe chicken? Garbanzo beans?
Butter beans!

" In the ordinarily sensible state of Maine, the Manhattan versus New England Clam Chowder took an odd turn. In 1939, State Representative Cleveland Sleeper of Rockland, Maine, introduced a bill outlawing tomatoes from being used in chowder. This bill prohibited Manhattan clam chowder in Maine. Though the bill was argued, it never was approved.
As I grew up hearing, "Chowdah: Anyone who calls it 'chowder' would put tomatoes in it."
So one time I sent my husband out for oyster crackers for chowdah ( um yep ) and he came home with those nut cracker type eating tools.
I cried laughed for hours. Still do when I think about it. π€£
"WERE YOU BROUGHT UP IN A CARL'S JUNIOR!?"
Couldn't find oyster crackers here's the next best thing. Lobstah crackers ...snort.π¦
This is hilarious! Poor Hubs! π
Yes we called them the same. Dual usage. π I really wanted these though...
True story. I've brought up images of exactly what product I want, including the specific weight and cost of the item when I make a list to send mine to the store with.
He still comes home with extra things.
I do all the marketing, and I know what oyster crackers are.
@GeezerWench Are we back on clams now?

If it has tomatoes, it's soup, not chowder.
