The irony is that the whole reason Roman Catholics created an expensive system of parochial schools in the first place was that despite the establishment clause, public schools were pretty explicitly anti-Catholic. Allegiance to the pope was felt equivalent to allegiance to a foreign government -- traitorous -- and children were taught that.

Catholics more than anyone should understand the importance of separation of church and state.
