Context for non-UK folk: This bill criminalizes legitimate protests. The PM of the Conservatives has just been fined for breaking the law he wrote, has most likely influenced the police in their judgment on this matter, tries to undermine an internal report on this matter, has lied to parliament about it, has tried to abolish parliament before, has given billions to unqualified friends and families without tender, but the opposition is the enemy of law-abiding citizens.
@ToruOkada It's not just in the UK...and I'm afraid the #mangerine made it worse globally. You're describing the evangelical christo-fascists here-formerly known as republicans. Until they ran out every single moderate republican. This is a global phenomenon.
@ToruOkada I don't know how familiar you are with the level of disinformation that has worked it's way into the everyday lives of our population over here-how would you rate the level of disinformation pumped out to the population in the UK, generally? In short-I'm not so confident that we're going to get over it as quickly over here.
@FayreLylith The disinformation level is, I think, comparable. The media agenda is set by three media millionaires (Murdoch, Rothermere, Desmond) and their hired bloodhounds. Media reliability is low. The phone-hacking scandal was not accidentally in the UK. Independent media (newspapers TV, radio) exist, but the current government tries to get them under control (BBC, Channel 4).
@FayreLylith What makes it more difficult in the US is the existence of this ultrareligious extremist wing. You cannot argue with religion; everything can be justified with "God told me so". So, yeah, I think the US has a longer way back to sanity than the UK.
@FayreLylith Indeed. The former Conservative party in the UK has been taken over by UKIP-BNP. Literally. In the last election 2019, every single candidate was deselected unless they proved beyond doubt that they truly hated the EU and immigrants while waving flags. But this is coming to an end, I hope, as we have seen in Australia.
