I used to highlight the Meuse-Argonne, specifically Major Whittlesey’s battalion. More than half of the US soldiers in that unit were killed. I found out years later, that my grandfather was in that unit, and made it home. He would never talk about it. Cher Ami was a carrier pigeon that was key in saving the battalion from friendly fire. He lost a leg on that mission. He was brought to Fort Monmouth NJ where he lived the rest of his life. He is in the Smithsonian.
