When he talks about friends thinking he's tuned out, but what's really happened is he's gotten distracted by a detail... that's a very, very common experience for me. It's classic "inattentive" ADHD. We don't feel like we're not paying attention because we're often paying quite intense attention--we just can't control what we're focused on.

Yep. I'm sure my teachers would have been surprised to learn I usually read the book the night before the exam, because I would have been right there in the class discussion about it all semester.
