I am acutely aware that our family has (only thus far) avoided the tragedies that afflict so many families, regardless of wealth or status.
A distant family member, about our age, is posting on Facebook updates about her husband's losing battle against cancer. He just was admitted into hospice care.

It is startling when this happens to people who are the same age - and a wake up call.
@ACG2 but I'm woke!
My wife used to tease me when I began claiming that we both 'were at an age where we could just drop dead at any minute.'
Then I began sending her obits of celebrities and former classmates that were our age.
She doesn't tease me any more about it.
@SECRET_ASIAN_MAN @ACG2 I don't really notice when celebrities pass away. Theirs is a different world. But it's depressing reading obituaries of people I was friends with in school.
