These drivers ed. contraptions were apparently a thing in the early 1950s. I've never seen one, but I'd like to think that the sound of manual transmissions grinding gears would have been extraordinary!
@carmen I've never seen one and I took drivers ed., but it was a course tought by a private company. We just had automatic transmission cars with an additional passenger-side brake for the instructor.
@Coctaanatis We had something close to that in the ‘80s called simulators. Row after row of steering wheel consoles with pedals on the floor, filled an auditorium. A film projected a street scene that we would “drive” through. Being teenagers, we would hit the accelerator when a child walked into the street. That would prompt the instructor to give us a stern warning that doing so again would get us thrown out of Drivers’ Ed. Class. Good times.
