The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and USA Today are _newspapers_.

The New York Post, The Daily Mail, and The Sun are _tabloids_.

It's hard to take something seriously when the source quoted is the New York Post.

If the paper you are reading has a headline like "Sheer brilliance Kanye West’s 'wife' turns heads in 'naked' top and tights in Italy" or "I spotted ghosts in my store!" it is not a real newspaper, it is a tabloid.
