I used to work in the production department of a small publisher in Boston. Whenever a new sample carton of books came in from the printer the whole department would gather 'round in an orgy of book sniffing.
Our department head used to declaim "I love the smell of press varnish in the morning. Smells like. . . victory" in her best Robert Duvall impression.
