At this point I'm thinking there might be a deeper story here. I mean, this is terrible but I'm starting to wonder if something much worse is underneath it all. I'm not a conspiracy guy but come on now... why do this?

It's not about having more wealth. It's about having more than everyone else has _left_.
You can't have wealth without poverty, so they destroy wealth.
Not all wealth comes as $. This was cultural wealth, and now it's destroyed, so that nobody else can have it.
