Quick question about the US elections. Does the campaigning continue right up to the day or does it have to stop so many horse/days before?

I have worked campaigns, and if the polls closed at 8, we were knocking on doors until the last minute people could reasonably walk down the block and get in line at their polling place. I talked to the guy in the gold chains standing on the corner at 7 pm probably selling drugs, and convinced him to cast the first vote of his life, for Obama.
@AlphaCentauri good to know, similar to the UK in some ways
