Lol, I started typing on paper tape that was then fed into the modem during a very brief connection to receive the printout, back when computer time was billed by the second.
Punch cards were such a marvelous step up, as you could proofread the line of characters printed at the top of the card, and you could re-type one card if you put an "O" instead of a "0" instead of waiting for your printout to find out you had a typo and then re-typing the entire paper tape.

Captain Crunch actually did time in federal prison for defrauding the phone company. Jobs and Wozniak got pulled over once with a blue box on the seat of their car and would have been in prison as well if the cop had known what it was.
It's not illegal to manufacture, transport, or posses the device. It was only illegal to use it.
