Contemporary examples of participatory dictatorship can be found in countries where leaders use democratic institutions to legitimize their rule while simultaneously suppressing dissent and consolidating power. One prominent example is Russia under President Vladimir Putin. While Russia holds regular elections and has a multi-party system, Putin's government has been criticized for crackdowns on political opposition, freedom of the press, and civil liberties. Critics argue that the electoral process is manipulated to ensure Putin's continued dominance and that dissenting voices are silenced through legal means or intimidation. Another example of participatory dictatorship is seen in Turkey under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Erdogan's government has been accused of using democratic processes to concentrate power in the hands of the president, weakening checks and balances, and cracking down on opposition voices. The erosion of media freedom, human rights abuses, and the suppression of dissent have raised concerns about the country's democratic credentials. In both cases, the leaders maintain a façade of democracy by allowing some form of citizen participation or opposition, but ultimately exercise control over key institutions, stifle dissent, and centralize authority in ways that undermine the principles of democracy. This blending of democratic elements with authoritarian practices is a hallmark of participatory dictatorship.
