Obviously, he's lying about why he was arrested, but quite apart from that, it seems odd to hear a priest characterise prayer as simply "the thoughts they've got in their own mind".

Either prayer is just your own thoughts, or it has an actual effect, in which case it's an action that you should be held responsible for like any other action. I don't see how you can have it both ways.
