Yay, I finally got spice bush seeds! Native, finches like the seeds, pollinators like the blooms, hosts the beautiful spicebush swallowtail, and you can dry the seeds and grind them for an allspice type spice. Never identified it positively in the wild, now I have a shrub for the spot the rose was in (don't want my dogs to get scratched when they have the zoomies).
By the way, even if you dig "way deep" to remove a rose, it still might try to come back occasionally for a few years.
