@LiberalLibrarian: Weisman isn't at all wrong. He's accurately stating the way both are seeing it. The Republicans ARE doing their opera exactly that way. It's their ongoing narrative to get the flyover country, the non-major-metro people angry at the "coastal elites". It's not about anything real. It's simply politics and about power, about 2024.
