The republicans may have already introduced a means to shift SS/Medicare to discretionary spending. If the Supreme Court takes this case we could lose our SS/Medicare before the end of the year. There is a link to the decision in the article.

@KGinKS: Well, there is precedent at SCOTUS, who decades ago ruled that Social Security and Medicare are government programs and that as such, the government through passed legislation can change or eliminate them altogether.

Loads of folks have told me that I am wrong, that SCOTUS never ruled that, but I reckon we may be about to see.

I hope, although the current SCOTUS seems to not think much of their predecessors decisions.

@KGinKS: The prior decision was that the government should through legislation stop Social Security and Medicare altogether because they're both government programs, that they exists due to laws that can be changed or stricken as per congressional legislation. The neocons on SCOTUS would, I wager, certainly agree with that and rest their decisions on it.
