Good morning.
We rented a house yesterday for the month of May and will start slowly moving our things this afternoon. The only chance we have to move is during my dads nap time which is usually 1pm to about 3. We will do it over several days and then after we visit the lawyer on the 7th we are pretty sure he will kick us out again during one of his episodes. The courts will send 4 people to visit him including a lawyer to act on his behalf. He will be hard to deal with.

First and foremost I want to say to everyone, thank you for the support you have given us. It means the world to us.

We have started the legal process but it will take time. I am flying my niece and her husband out to watch my dad for 3 days so my wife and I can take a small break before the courts get involved.
The great place we had found for him sent someone to evaluate my dad and he told them to leave. Now we have to find another place. Oh well.

Good morning.
I am still in Florida working to find my dad a place to live. He refuses to come to Costa Rica to live with us so now since he also refuses to leave his home for an assisted living facility, we have to get a court order. I will ask the court for guardianship thus being able to force him to live someplace safe.
My wife and I have never been so tired and stressed. We don't want him to stay here but the court will not send him to CR. We found a beautiful place for him though.

Only 2 more days until we return to Florida. I have already arranged a meeting with a service to give my wife and I a break occasionally so we can get out for a few hours a week with my dad being watched and cared for.
Today we go to look at a house that we may buy because we don't want to wait the 6 to 8 months for ours to be built. It is a large house on a large fenced property so my dad could walk the dog and wander without getting too far. We shall see.

Only a few more days until we return to Florida with my dad. We have started talking to him about the future and what the possibilities may be. The biggest issue currently is his dog. It is all he has left and we don't expect him to give her up.
We are looking forward to returning to Florida for his sake and comfort but that puts us away from our home. Tough thing but he has to be first at this point. We will figure it out. Hopefully he will move here to CR.

Good morning.
So our little excursion to the Arenal volcano did not quite go as planned.
We have returned a day early because my dad was too confused. He kept wandering off and going through all the cabinets and closets at the rental house trying to figure out where he was.
He would turn of the A/C even though he would say it was too hot, and it was.
He did get to see the volcano before we left town and some wildlife although only when we pulled to the side of the road.

Good morning.
So both dogs have had their check ups and we will get the travel docs on the 2nd of April. I can't believe I am saying this but I am glad to be going back to Florida. Dad is much easier to deal with in his own home.
Problem is that will not last long because we cannot afford full time care in the US.
Today we travel to Arenal volcano and hopefully some new sites to take his mind off of being in Costa Rica instead of Florida. He likes it here, but not enough.

Today we take both dogs to get a check up for their travel docs to the US.
He says he just wants to go home.
I get that. We will Fly back to Florida on April 4th and my wife and I will have an open ended ticket for return. We will attempt to build our house from afar by flying back and forth for about 6 months. Not gonna be fun.
We do not want to put dad into a facility as he will decline quickly.
It is easier to take care of him in his own house than in ours.

Good morning.
This morning I booked a couple of nights at a ranch house near La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano. I think my dad will enjoy it out there since there is a lot of wildlife and great views of the volcano.
He got up very early, for him, about 6:30am yesterday and we went shopping, which he always enjoys, and had lunch before returning home to let him take a 3 hour nap.
For the first time he mentioned to me that it might be good to sell his condo in Florida.

Good morning.
Things are better today with my dad. My sister tells me she wants to move in with him along with her husband and 2 dogs to take care of him. She has seen him for maybe 7 hours in 2 years and thinks she can handle this.
I have lots of questions for her. It appears as though she wants to upgrade her housing and lifestyle on his dime. Anyway, she has an awakening ahead. It is not a paid position.
Today we will take him to go do some shopping and have some lunch.

I am no longer sure that I can do this. My dad now won’t leave his dog alone for any length of time. The poor thing is always in his lap or being picked up and carried around. I get the attachment after losing my mom but this is going to be hard.
Last night he decided he wanted to return to Florida but when I explained that it requires papers for the dog he was sad that he couldn’t leave today. We leave April 4th and I am going to need help when I get back.

My dad is now confused as to where he is and how he got here. We keep assuring him that we have his back and he is visiting our house in Costa Rica. He now is worried we will not take him back to his condo and asked if he still has it.
My mom always told him that he cannot live alone and he does remember that.
Today we go to Manuel Antonio to show him some wildlife.
Since my mom passed he has been in a bit of a decline so we will try to head that off.

Good morning.
We just returned from Florida and brought my dad and his dog with us. Hopefully we can take his mind off of my mom for a while and get some rest ourselves. We will show him around Costa Rica and discuss his living situation a little bit then on April 4th we return to Florida to make the big decisions. Banking, real estate and such. Then will come the biggest. Where will he live. Hopefully with us in CR, we will see.

Good morning.
So, I went and picked up my moms ashes and brought them home while my dad was having a nap. When he woke and I showed him that she was back at home he forgot all that he had already known and that we had talked about over the past week.
I explained it all over again and he accepted it once again but I suspect when he wakes later this morning it will start again.
He placed her ashes beside my brothers. He cried once again and now hopefully will accept it.

Good morning.
I have finished making the arrangements and Friday we should have my mom’s ashes at home.
Now it is a matter of reminding my dad every morning that she is no longer here.
My poor wife has Covid so I have to take care of her away from him so he doesn’t get it. So far she is the only one in this house that has it.
Yesterday our dog had a seizure so I have to figure out a time to take her to the vet. She doesn’t seem to have any issues now.

Wow, I have not felt this much dread before. Waiting for my dad to wake up and having to tell him she is gone. 65 years is a long time to have been together. This is not going to be a good day.

So, I just got the call from hospice. My mom passed away about an hour ago. 3am Florida time. I am glad I made it back in time but now the hardest part for me will begin.
My parents have been married over 65 years and with his dementia, my dad will have to ask over and over what happened to mom. He will be lost without her. She was his rock.
The entire immediate family made it to see her yesterday so that was nice.

Good morning.

We are flying back to Florida today for at least a 16 day visit. Mom is currently staying at the hospice but wants to come home for a while. We will do our best to get her there.
We won't arrive at the hospice until about 10pm but then go home to my dad to watch him.
I took all the car keys with me when I left to keep him from getting lost again. My niece has a rental car there so they have transportation. She has to go back to work in Texas though.
