As a political scientist, I see that democracy is not a given in the US any longer. As an analyst of American culture, I realize that progressive ideas are a minority in an overwhelmingly conservative context. Having grown up during the waning days of state socialism in Eastern Europe, my sense of urgency about this matter far surpasses the easy complacency so often encountered in well-meaning middle-of-the-road two-party systems in democracies.
