@Dane @elbutterfield Can you imagine trying to hire programmers for this project? Must be proficient in a forgotten assembly language. Code was written before you were born. Mustbe proficient at desk-checking code - IDE and debugger experience not considered useful.
@elbutterfield @Dane I think the definitive answer was that the onboard systems are written in assembler. I had an 8K PDP-8E in the early 70s. There was a Fortran IV compiler for it, but all my Fortran programs had to be heavily overlaid, with overlays coming from DECtapes. On a subsequent Nova, I was able to code a discrete hadamard transform in 16 machine instructions, leveraging auto-increment/decrement locations and other tricks. Assembler was my forte for years.
