A very interesting variation on Franklin's glass harmonica - the Cristal Baschet. The metal resonators make all the difference.

This is INCREDIBLE. Thank you!!!
@peterquirk LOVE glass harmonica music
so beautiful.
@grapho @voltronic @corlin @zephtx Here's another amazing performance on the Cristal Baschet.
Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, first movement. https://youtu.be/WbIj40ZEF0s
@peterquirk @voltronic @corlin @zephtx
with an unexpected prog-rock twist!
@peterquirk
Other stuff has been added to the mix on this one, but it's quite lovely.
Oh wait, I just got to the ELP section. Someone's going to start flipping end-over-end while playing piano!
@peterquirk @voltronic @corlin @zephtx
one of the fascinating things about this instrument is the very physics of it.
it sounds like a moog synthesizer. but in actuality, you need to actually touch the rods [which need to be made of actual crystal i guess] and your fingertips need to be moistened with actual water.
@grapho @voltronic @corlin @zephtx Just like playing the wine glasses.
@peterquirk @voltronic @corlin @zephtx
that's it exactly! i surmise that was what inspired benjamin franklin's invention in the first place.
and i still remember – with [ahem] crystal clarity – the first time i ever did this on a glass myself. i hardly believed it was possible, but others at the table were doing it too, and suddenly we were all producing these extraordinary sounds.
@grapho @voltronic @corlin @zephtx Prof. Julis SUmner Miller would have had a field day with this instrument if it had existed while he was alive.

@peterquirk @voltronic @corlin @zephtx
i bet you're right!
@grapho @peterquirk @voltronic @zephtx
Yes
But the most astonishing thing is the amplification, and the standing wave, interference, that gives that sound…
@corlin
Yes, that's the thing that really blows me away, and makes you swear there is some synthesis or amplification going on.
I need to find one of these and play it.
@voltronic @corlin @grapho @zephtx Here's an alternative - samples.

@corlin @grapho @voltronic @zephtx It's probably not a coincidence that the Moonlight Sonata was played close to a solid concrete wall to enhance the interference.
@peterquirk
I want to hear one of these in a cathedral.
@peterquirk
Wow!
@peterquirk Wow! Amazing!
@peterquirk magic
@peterquirk I'd love to play one!
@peterquirk
Non Electric.
No Motors
All Acoustic.
Standing Wave interference in the physical world.
Very cool
