Hitler's followers had huge egos, quarreled constantly, milked the system for their profit, got in each others' way, were blinded by ideology and greed, and were basically incompetent.

But they were still able to engineer a world war, put millions into concentration camps, and kill (by execution, warfare, and murder of prisoners) something like 15 million people or more.

Incompetence is not a safeguard against destruction.

I think the number of people who are willing to "go along to get along" is always very high, and the number of people who will refuse to take orders is often too small.

@DavidSalo @holon42 One result of the Milgram experiment was that the number of refusals to take blindly orders increased if a person voicing objections was present. Be that objecting person, and others will follow.
