Took my son skiing the last 2 days. My #1 concern was an injury. Sure enough, 1 hour into skiing today broke his leg. Talk about a long, draining day.
@Minholkin thank you. He had about 2.5 hours of trauma and is exhausted. the splint and Motrin have been enough to at least make things tolerable until we can get in Monday for a cast.
Too soon for a cast? Need to ensure swelling goes down?
What a disappointing and worrisome turn of events.
@Minholkin that's the weird part -- it's not swollen at all and there's no discoloration. i have the x-ray and it's clearly fractured.
unfortunately by the time they got everything situated and whatnot the orthopedics were out the door so he got a splint. tried calling for a Monday appointment but everyone was closed, so I went to voicemail and just hope they can get us in first thing Monday.
I'm glad there doesn't appear to be complications around the fracture, and it sounds like he's tolerating it well, all things considered.
Ah, the stories life gives us to tell!
@dbinkowski I am so sorry - is he ok? What happened?
@Jennifelroy thanks. yeah, he's OK. has a spiral fracture on his tibia. easily the most painful thing he's ever had to go through. once I got him to the hospital things got better but it was a traumatic several hours for him prior. to getting the splint.
@dbinkowski The poor kid. How old is he?
@dbinkowski My heart goes out to both of you. I know how scary and awful it must have been for you both. I'm a ski patroler, and I hate it when we're actually needed.
@Jennifelroy thank you. it's been a really exhausting day. he said tonight it doesn't even hurt and all he's had is a splint and Motrin, so hoping this was the absolute worst of it.
@dbinkowski I hope so too. The Motrin will be key for the next few days. Once he's feeling better, he's going to have a really impressive story to share with his friends. Best of luck!
@dbinkowski True story. My mom and dad were both black diamond skiers. They met while working ski patrol, bringing an injured guy off a mountain. Both excellent downhill and cross country. When I was 9 years old, they took me skiing. I fell off the rope tow halfway up the bunny slope, rolled down the hill, landed in a puddle of muddy slush. I was ok. Good thing because they took their sweet time getting over to me.
Some of us are meant to be lodge lizards. Hope your son has a speedy recovery!
@dbinkowski And yes, I know falling off a rope tow is next to impossible. It requires letting go. What can I say. Lodge lizard!! And proud. 🚫🎿
@DachshundSaidSo I haven't been skiing since my early teens. I played basketball during the Winter so getting to the slopes was tough. I grew a foot size every year (size 12 at 12, etc). Am currently a size 17. I'd love to get out there with him but I can't find ski or snowboarding boots in my size, so for now I'm a lounge lizard I guess lol
@dbinkowski Did he crash into something or just fall? Good news is kids heal fast. He has youth on his side!
@DachshundSaidSo he crashed into a ski jump pole. bindings were super tight and didn't give. instead his leg took the brunt of the pressure and cracked. He'll be okay though. He's a tough kid.
@dbinkowski Ouch. Well glad he is weathering it well. At least he didn't fall off the rope tow, but had a proper crash that will make for a good story, later. Plus all the other kids will want to sign his cast. 😎
@dbinkowski An aside...my room mate is 63. She skis, snowboards, surfs, climbs up on roofs, and believe me, living with her is not easy. I am the biggest klutz she has ever met. Her son recently broke his leg skiing. I must be a bad person, because knowing that, made me feel better. Oops.
@dbinkowski
Ugh I am sorry! I imagine you are exhausted.
I hope the prospects for his recovery are strong and his pain is manageable. 😕
