Code's eclectic music pick of the day:

I can't determine who this song reminds me of most... ELO? Beatles/George Harrison? Maybe Roy Orbison? I guess it doesn't matter, because I'm still diggin' the vibes of "For Your Soul" by Josh Ritter.

Diggin' the tater love today. Started the potato diet 10 days ago (thanks Penn!) so am deeply interested. Pounds are coming off, and I'm still enjoying the taste. Favorite way so far is oven fries with malt vinegar, or simple microwave-baked with Trader Joe's Yuzu Hot Sauce.

Anybody out there in electronics? My experience is hobbyist level, and it's been many years since I did much. Fixing a Denon AVR that has a persistent buzz for the first 15 minutes it's on. I've fixed the cracked solder joints on an IC mount (the commonly known cause) but the buzz persists. So doing visual recon. Spotted this suspicious item (photo front and side views). I *think* it must be a capacitor given the 10 pf rating, but unsure about the poo. Is this cap leaking? Or is this a glueblob?

Exactly that, Stephen. I talk about the contrived nature of the trope in the article. Even shows like DEVS, which *expressly* acknowledge infinite time streams, still ultimately have to contrive reasons we should care about certain timelines in particular.

It's a problem that attests to human limits to fully understanding what life in a multiverse would entail--let alone to building a coherent ethics from that view of reality. We are small, fleeting critters in a big, big cosmos.

If you love cinema, I'd recommend "Living" with Bill Nighy. Perfect for a rainy day and beautifully, lovingly shot. (I was in love with the movie even before the opening titles were finished)

Be aware that it's not a light, summer, carefree movie. But if you're willing, wow, this'll hit ya' in the feels.

Currently available on Netflix.

Just heard of Don Lancaster's passing. Those of you who've been involved with tech and computers for a long time will likely recognize his name. I read a lot of his stuff when I was a kid. 😢

I think it's time for a black band on HN.

I've come across Amazon's sneaky Prime sign up. Be careful. You must change that membership to zero.

Whenever I am feeling down, I go back and watch Season 2 episode 1. It never fails to make me laugh until I nearly pee. Or Season 2 episode 2, where Roy and Moss pimp the cell phone vibration.

GOLD.

OK, this is genius marketing by Matomo, and absurdly accurate.

But it's time for another PSA:

If you rely on GA or GA4 (or "most" other analytics packages) to track # of visitors are on your site, what pages they're visiting, etc. you're likely getting numbers that do not reflect reality. Most people/browsers block all of the well-known analytics packages.

Plus, you're feeding the Google for free.

Just say no.

Use your server logs. It's the only way to be sure.
