Speaking of covers, here is the original version of this song, from the woman who wrote it. Any other version you might've heard was a cover. 🙂

Here is Torn by ednaswap (also check out More... what a voice! I miss grunge/post-grunge)

I can't play this song anymore without singing along.

Loudly.

The lyrics are great, the tune is catchy, and it's just about the happiest sad song I've ever heard.

Yep, I've posted Ambrosia before, and today's pick is another of theirs. Partly because my brain is an absolute sucker for songs in 3/4 time, but also because it's such a beautiful song and deserves to be heard more often. To illustrate, You're the Biggest Part of Me has a Spotify plays/playlist score of 73,551,966, while today's pick is 176,587.

To partially rectify that, here is Lover Arrive by Ambrosia.

You'd have to be deep into jazz to recognize this guy (though I think at least 2 of you might) 🙂

Marcus Belgrave is one of those lesser-known jazz artists who was a true giant, but who deserved much wider acclaim.

As a trumpet player, I was fortunate to meet him when I was around 16 (in MI). I thought I was heavily into jazz, but he turned me on to awesome stuff I'd never heard before. Enjoy!

I'm so vain, I probably think this song's about me (based on the title, anyway).

Here is Captain Awkward by Moron Police.

Today I woke up with this song in my head. While some people passionately dislike covers, I find them refreshing and occasionally even better than the original.

The Bird and the Bee have released albums of their 'reinterpretations' of songs, and my favorite is chock-full of Hall & Oates.

So for a lazy, lovely, lilting Sunday, here is I Can't Go For That, by The Bird and the Bee:

Well, for day 7 of prog week, I'm picking from one of the giants of prog. Here is Indiscipline by King Crimson, playing live with - wait - how many drummers?

WHOA! Hold on a sec. So today The Hu released a song with Alice in Chains? Wow. MORE PLEASE.

Spread the light when the sky is grey
Let things rise and grow to carry on the flame
Reach the lines to enlighten fate
Free from human kind now we're gone away

OK, we are on day 6 of my self-proclaimed prog week, and perfect for listening on a cold, dark day (where I am) here is Yonder by Klone.

It's already day 4 of prog week, and I still have not brought out the Haken. It's time. And it's hard to pick any one song by them, but after last night I need something encouraging. So...

Here is Earthrise by Haken.

This week my picks will focus on prog rock, including some of my favorites from several sub-genres, including math rock, prog metal, djent and maybe even Zeuhl. To kick off the week, check out What I Really Need, from RPWL. (There is an official video, as well, but I feel that its cheesiness detracts from the music and lyrics.)

This guy's voice is so distinctive. I sometimes think of Bowie when I first hear it, but I enjoy David Sylvian's music so much more. He's had quite the career (check out the band Japan, or his collabs with Ryuichi Sakamoto, or the reformed band Rain Tree Crow). All I know is that once you hear his voice, you'll probably always be able to identify one of his songs. Here is Taking the Veil by David Sylvian:

There's never been a band quite like Cloud Cult. It's worth reading their Wikipedia page to get a feel for who they are, what they've been through in this life, and how it has molded their musical journey. They have several more well-known songs, but this one always gets me. If you dig it, check out the entire album "Light Chasers". Here is "Unexplainable Stories".
