Day 3 of music week.

(Remember: You MUST listen to this with headphones to get any binaural effect.)

Here is I Want More by CAN, recorded using Kunstkopf (the ARTIFICIAL HEAD SOUND TECHNIQUE) :

Day 2 of music week.

(Remember: You MUST listen to this with headphones to get the binaural effect. Also, binaural recording has nothing to do with "binaural beats")

Here is Otherside by Perfume Genius:

A short discussion of binaural a couple of weeks ago made me think that maybe there are some out there who've not tried it. So this week's theme will be music.

Binaural is a special technique that records using a human head model. Playback sounds much more like "you are there"

However, to get the effect, you MUST listen on headphones. So put 'em on, close your eyes, and check out Amber Rubarth

Looks like it's going to be a stormy day and night, and right now it's very dark outside, even though almost noon. I generally enjoy gloomy days, and today's pick perfectly complements the overall feel. Here is the mesmerizing and wonderfully melancholy "Freeze" by Klaus Schulze

Today just feels like a Steven Wilson day. I'll be streaming Porcupine Tree for the rest of my morning, but for now, here is The Raven That Refused To Sing

From NuHussel Orchestra here is The Forest. If you enjoyed my previous Snarky Puppy or Tigran picks, you'll probably dig this... a very interesting group, indeed.

Day 7 of . Kosmischer Läufer has a new album this month, "The Secret Cosmic Music of the East German Olympic Program 1972-83 Volume Five" that works well for my coding flow. Here is Nordlicht. (side note: I hear an faint echo of the Lost in Space season 3 theme phrase here at several points, so... nostalgia)

Day 6 of . On high energy days, or days when truly in 'the zone', a switch to something high energy (where beats are ok, but still, no vocals for me). Something djenty, heavy, maybe complex rhythmically. Here is Origin by Anup Sastry.

Day 5 of . Vangelis is special to me. Something about his phrasing is instantly recognizable. When he died last May, it hit me pretty hard, even though I knew him only through a love of his music (that Klaus Schulze had passed only a month earlier was like a double-whammy to my musical world). His mostly acoustic album Nocturne is beautiful, and great for coding day. Here is Mythodea - Movement 9

Day 4 of . When I am in a blue funk (often) but still need to do work, nostalgic tracks provide comfort and allow my brain to focus on code instead. This is an album I've loved since it was first released. Best with headphones, but always hauntingly somber (to match my mood).

Code's eclectic music pick of the day:

Day 3 of . There are several soundtrack albums that make for good music for coders. Here is a track from one of my favorite soundtrack albums, Day One by Hans Zimmer.

Code's eclectic music pick of the day:

Day 2 of . As mentioned, I can't do drones (music). Brian Eno is one of very few artists I've found who can create ambient music that still has enough structure to engage the part of my brain that helps with coding Plus, the song becomes memorable on its own, instead of existing only as background hummm. The entire album "Apollo" is excellent for concentration or meditation. Here is Under Stars:

Seems that there are many coders and tech people here, so this week I want to focus on . Many devs I know seem to prefer some form of EDM, trance, dub or similar. Maybe mixed with some rap. For coding, I prefer no vocals, no overheavy beats, but definite structure. Math is good. (no drones). Share what YOU enjoy for coding with the tag above. Let's find new stuff!

Here's Glassworks I. Opening

Ah, the final day of . This album creates a mood that is hard to describe. To me it's a bit melancholy, but still very enjoyable. The backing strings make it feel like it could be a soundtrack to some stylish, late 60's film noir. With Bill Evans on piano, it's pretty hard to go wrong. Check the whole album if this style appeals to you.

Here is Reflections in the Park by The Gary Mcfarland Orchestra

It's day 6 of . Genre blending in music is often unsuccessful, and can produce a muddled, gloopy mess. But in the hands of competent artists, it can be transformative. By melding a foundation of traditional jazz and 70's jazz/funk, then sprinkling in some hip-hop and spoken word influences, Alfa Mist is a great listen for a puttering-around-the-house Saturday.

Here is Keep On by Alfa Mist.

It's day 5 of . Since Tigran Hamasyan is one of my favorite geniuses, I'll pick him again today. I especially enjoy the section starting at the 3 minute mark, but all of this piece makes my brain happy with the complex rhythms and changes. Here is The Grid (live) by Tigran. Man I need to see this guy in concert someday.
