Code's eclectic music pick of the day:

Day 4 of . When I am in a blue funk (often) but still need to do work, nostalgic tracks provide comfort and allow my brain to focus on code instead. This is an album I've loved since it was first released. Best with headphones, but always hauntingly somber (to match my mood).

Code's eclectic music pick of the day:

Day 3 of . There are several soundtrack albums that make for good music for coders. Here is a track from one of my favorite soundtrack albums, Day One by Hans Zimmer.

Code's eclectic music pick of the day:

Day 2 of . As mentioned, I can't do drones (music). Brian Eno is one of very few artists I've found who can create ambient music that still has enough structure to engage the part of my brain that helps with coding Plus, the song becomes memorable on its own, instead of existing only as background hummm. The entire album "Apollo" is excellent for concentration or meditation. Here is Under Stars:

Seems that there are many coders and tech people here, so this week I want to focus on . Many devs I know seem to prefer some form of EDM, trance, dub or similar. Maybe mixed with some rap. For coding, I prefer no vocals, no overheavy beats, but definite structure. Math is good. (no drones). Share what YOU enjoy for coding with the tag above. Let's find new stuff!

Here's Glassworks I. Opening

Ah, the final day of . This album creates a mood that is hard to describe. To me it's a bit melancholy, but still very enjoyable. The backing strings make it feel like it could be a soundtrack to some stylish, late 60's film noir. With Bill Evans on piano, it's pretty hard to go wrong. Check the whole album if this style appeals to you.

Here is Reflections in the Park by The Gary Mcfarland Orchestra

It's day 6 of . Genre blending in music is often unsuccessful, and can produce a muddled, gloopy mess. But in the hands of competent artists, it can be transformative. By melding a foundation of traditional jazz and 70's jazz/funk, then sprinkling in some hip-hop and spoken word influences, Alfa Mist is a great listen for a puttering-around-the-house Saturday.

Here is Keep On by Alfa Mist.

Code's eclectic music pick of the day:

It's day 5 of . Since Tigran Hamasyan is one of my favorite geniuses, I'll pick him again today. I especially enjoy the section starting at the 3 minute mark, but all of this piece makes my brain happy with the complex rhythms and changes. Here is The Grid (live) by Tigran. Man I need to see this guy in concert someday.

A storm is brewin', with some locations already reporting baseball-sized hail. And it's headed my direction, so trying to mellow that harsh.

It's day 4 of . I was completely unaware of this collaboration until this past week, but SO happy I found it. Here is Serj Tankian (!) with Tigran Hamasyan (!!) playing Through Nights and Hopes. Dig it!

Listening today: The album Sweet Honey Bee by Duke Pearson. With Freddie Hubbard (trumpt), Ron Carter (bass) and Joe Henderson (sax), this swings.

Perfect (for me) to brighten up this rainy morning.

This week I will try to bring seven days worth of (call it nu jazz or post jazz or whatever you like). Feel free to post your own picks to add to the conversation, but please, let's not try to decide if it's "jazz" or not. As Duke said, "if music is agreeable to my ear, why does it have to have a category? It either sounds good or it doesn't".

Starting things off, here is Chaser by Mammal Hands

For day 4 of , we're gonna go deep and check out Skull Snaps. This group was a bit of a mystery, for many years nobody really knew who the band members were. They later became one of the most sampled bands in hip hop.

Grooved for your listening pleasure, here is I Turn My Back on Love by Skull Snaps.

Code's eclectic music pick of the day:

For day 3 of , here is a band that started right here in my backyard (Denton TX - home of my alma mater and also the birthplace of DOZENS of amazing bands).

If you ever get a chance to see this band live, take it. Here is Snarky Puppy playing Lingus - We Like It Here. (perhaps closer to pure jazz, but with a definite funk lean)
