A storm is brewin', with some locations already reporting baseball-sized hail. And it's headed my direction, so trying to mellow that harsh.

It's day 4 of . I was completely unaware of this collaboration until this past week, but SO happy I found it. Here is Serj Tankian (!) with Tigran Hamasyan (!!) playing Through Nights and Hopes. Dig it!

Listening today: The album Sweet Honey Bee by Duke Pearson. With Freddie Hubbard (trumpt), Ron Carter (bass) and Joe Henderson (sax), this swings.

Perfect (for me) to brighten up this rainy morning.

Code's eclectic music pick of the day:

This week I will try to bring seven days worth of (call it nu jazz or post jazz or whatever you like). Feel free to post your own picks to add to the conversation, but please, let's not try to decide if it's "jazz" or not. As Duke said, "if music is agreeable to my ear, why does it have to have a category? It either sounds good or it doesn't".

Starting things off, here is Chaser by Mammal Hands

Capping off day 7 of , here is the KING of funk joined by the PRINCE of Funkness. Sadly the Prince is gone, but if you ever get a chance to be with the King, jump on it. He will have the whole venue jumpin'!

For day 4 of , we're gonna go deep and check out Skull Snaps. This group was a bit of a mystery, for many years nobody really knew who the band members were. They later became one of the most sampled bands in hip hop.

Grooved for your listening pleasure, here is I Turn My Back on Love by Skull Snaps.

Code's eclectic music pick of the day:

For day 3 of , here is a band that started right here in my backyard (Denton TX - home of my alma mater and also the birthplace of DOZENS of amazing bands).

If you ever get a chance to see this band live, take it. Here is Snarky Puppy playing Lingus - We Like It Here. (perhaps closer to pure jazz, but with a definite funk lean)

Speaking of covers, here is the original version of this song, from the woman who wrote it. Any other version you might've heard was a cover. 🙂

Here is Torn by ednaswap (also check out More... what a voice! I miss grunge/post-grunge)

I can't play this song anymore without singing along.

Loudly.

The lyrics are great, the tune is catchy, and it's just about the happiest sad song I've ever heard.

Here is Off My Mind by joe p

Code's eclectic music pick of the day:

Yep, I've posted Ambrosia before, and today's pick is another of theirs. Partly because my brain is an absolute sucker for songs in 3/4 time, but also because it's such a beautiful song and deserves to be heard more often. To illustrate, You're the Biggest Part of Me has a Spotify plays/playlist score of 73,551,966, while today's pick is 176,587.

To partially rectify that, here is Lover Arrive by Ambrosia.

You'd have to be deep into jazz to recognize this guy (though I think at least 2 of you might) 🙂

Marcus Belgrave is one of those lesser-known jazz artists who was a true giant, but who deserved much wider acclaim.

As a trumpet player, I was fortunate to meet him when I was around 16 (in MI). I thought I was heavily into jazz, but he turned me on to awesome stuff I'd never heard before. Enjoy!

I'm so vain, I probably think this song's about me (based on the title, anyway).

Here is Captain Awkward by Moron Police.

Code's eclectic music pick of the day is:

Today I woke up with this song in my head. While some people passionately dislike covers, I find them refreshing and occasionally even better than the original.

The Bird and the Bee have released albums of their 'reinterpretations' of songs, and my favorite is chock-full of Hall & Oates.

So for a lazy, lovely, lilting Sunday, here is I Can't Go For That, by The Bird and the Bee:
