Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue performed by the musical geniuses of Liquid Tension Experiment

Saddened to hear today that we've lost Angelo Badalamenti. Just 6 months ago we also lost Julee Cruise. Here's one of my favorite songs by that amazing team:

And now for some 70's prog, from a great group that is somewhat obscure (though they definitely deserve a wider audience). If you dig this, check out their albums. Here is Rock and Roll from La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros:

OK, ok, so... today's pick is NOT FOR EVERYONE. In fact, even if you like this band, it's very likely that you love some of their songs and hate others. But if you dig music, this guy is (opinion) up there with Zappa, Tankian and other creative geniuses. Check out Downgrade Desert by Igorrr:

And if you're daring, check out my fave of theirs. Once seen, it's not easily forgotten:

There's something about power pop, you can't help but be happy when you listen. Sometimes when I'm feeling blue (most days) I put on my melodic power pop playlist as a pick-me-up. Here is Summertime in My Heart by The Electric Soft Parade:

This prog/djent group from Tehran, Iran is a technical marvel. The fact that these two brothers often include their dad playing the santur/qanun in their videos is awesome! Here is Hyper Planet playing To Live with Wisdom:

I first heard this song on the radio when I was just a kid. It has stuck with me all these years. Here is What About Me? by Moving Pictures

More symphonic prog for today, Earthside is performing Mob Mentality here with the Moscow Studio Symphony Orchestra:

I grew up with this group, listening (and playing along) so often that I wore out the vinyl. The note held for one full minute in this song (at the 2:00 mark) taught me about circular breathing. If you've never explored the Crusaders, you're missing an important piece of American music history. If you dig this song, try the album "Gold" for an intro. Here's So Far Away, recorded live at the Roxy in 1974:

Whatever Makes You Feel Superior by Toehider

Electric Pow Wow Drum by The Halluci Nation (formerly A Tribe Called Red). What else can I say, I love guys, their music and their mission.

OK, it's time to bust out some glorious prog. One of my favorite groups in that genre is Haken. Most of their songs are not quite as corny/cool as this video, but it's a great intro to their flavor. Here is Cockroach King by Haken (if you want to explore them more, I'd highly recommend the albums The Mountain and 1985):

This may not be for everyone, but the more I listen to it, the more interesting and haunting it becomes. It's like the soundtrack to a beautiful yet unsettling dream. Here is The Gone Away by Belbury Poly.

I usually only do one per day, but just saw a RDJr post, so here is a song by Robert Downey, Jr. (he wrote it, produced it, sang it and played piano on this track - really a very interesting album, overall)

I only discovered The Enid a few years ago, but they are easily one of the most interesting "rock" bands I've ever encountered. Led by composer Robert John Godfrey, Enid songs are instantly recognizable, as he seamlessly blends elements of smart rock with lyrical, beautiful classical themes. Today's pick is special to me, and gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

Someone Shall Rise, by The Enid.

I first listened to Jarre's music when I was a teenager, and to this day these albums - especially the older ones - remain prominent on my desert island pick list. Something about these mathematical arpeggios digs deep into my (odd) brain, and soothes me.

So today's music pick is the entire album Equinoxe, by Jean-Michel Jarre. Listen on headphones for maximum impact.

Code's eclectic music pick of the day is:

Reflexion by mouse on the keys, one of the tightest modern jazz groups you'll ever see (although they often veer into rock, rap, and odd mixed genres).

If you've never listened to Thank You Scientist, today is your day to start. Such a great band. And what better way to be initiated than this joyous performance with the Bluecoats (holy cow! those mallets at 3:27!)
