@DeadlyAccurate Years ago there was a scientific study that tried to figure out the meaning of different sounds that cats make. The tiny little, kitten-sounding "mew!" is supposed to mean something like "I love you, please don't kill me." It serves some kind of protective purpose when they're little, but some cats never outgrow it. If you really want to freak them out, make the noise yourself and watch the reaction you get!
