Confederates evacuated from Atlanta
During the American Civil War, the Confederate evacuation of Atlanta began this day in 1864, shortly before Union troops led by William Tecumseh Sherman occupied the city, providing a much-needed victory for the North.
@WhiteRose Here's a 3¢ note from that period. I found it in a family Bible at Goodwill last year. The US Treasury issued fractional currency notes from 1862-72 due to people hoarding coins during the war. The person this was given to was a Union veteran from Indiana.
