Blue collar meal of the day as requested by my dad: Kraft mac&cheese and fried Spam.
My dad tells the story about the dinner he and my mom were invited to in the early 60s where the hosts served a single baked Spam block as the main course to feed four adults. My dad says, "Your mother and I knew we didn't have much disposable income but knew we weren't that poor." That aside, he said they had a wonderful dinner with their friends. There are a million sub stories and lessons to be rung out.
@Magnus that's awesome. We ate Spam sandwiches when I was a kid. It fits solidly in my neutral zone of foods along with baloney and creamed corn. We had it around mostly because my dad likes it and he worked for the company that made the cans.
Do you remember when the cans had a key soldered to the side and a little tab sticking off the side? The key was used as leverage to wind that tab off and open the can. Wow....I haven't thought about those old cans in a long time.
@Urbankidx4 Hah yes! And if the metal ribbon broke, you'd have to cut yourself to unwind the ribbon around the key to try again or just grab a pair of pliers to get the rest of it off.
Making Spam was an ordeal. Definietly worked up your appetite! 😂
@Urbankidx4 lol looks like its the perfect size and shape to fit a slab in there too!
@Urbankidx4 Spam can be breakfast, lunch AND dinner in Hawaii. lol So that looks AMAZING!
