My Top 2 Songs of the Week (2024 Week 24):

1. Kneecap – "I bhFiacha Linne" ("In Our Debt") Kneecap are a radicalized trio from Belfast who rap in English and Irish. Here they trade bars over a track that reminds me of classic grime, very emergency warning siren.

@TrueBloodNet I don't find 538 to be "idiots" (although they're sometimes wrong), nor do I agree that "all polls are crap" (although some polls are crap and even good polls have limited value). My point here is that they're both saying the election will be very close. Do you think it's going to be a landslide (and if so, which one)? Or do we agree with 538 and the polls on at least that point?

Anybody who claims to know who's going to win the election this year is full of crap. We're all going to have to work to get the outcome we want.

Bernie's podcast guest Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez talks about how her family's struggles to make a better life for themselves led her to become politically active, and she and Bernie talk about why they're supporting Biden despite profound disagreements over Israel's actions in Gaza.

4. Cardinals – "Twist and Turn". By the numbers, but solid, indie rock from up-and-coming Cork (Ireland) band (moody verses dominated by the bass guitar alternated with noisy verses dominated by 6-string guitars).

3. Yannis and the Yaw with Tony Allen – "Under the Strikes". Second single from the collab between the Foals frontman and the late Afropop legend goes just as hard as the first. Powerful and sinewy.

2. Alfie Templeman and Nile Rodgers – "Just a Dance". Fifth single from the 21-year-old Templeman's upcoming LP Radiosoul is all about that Chic disco sound—and he gets it right from the source in Nile Rodgers.

My Top 4 Songs of the Week (2024 Week 23):

1. Swiftumz – "Never Impress". San Francisco's Chris McVicker serves up a short but oh-so-twee slice of bedroom pop with a vibe similar to The Clean or The Housemartins (if they were a little more depressed).

@MPCavalier I have and I do! Gustaf's "Starting and Staring" and "Tarkovski" by Bodega are on my best of 2024 playlist for sure.

4. Habibi – "Do You Want Me Now". Brooklyn's Habibi swirl together Middle Eastern melodies,'60s girl-group harmonies and some chunky distorto guitar to whip up this tasty treat for your ears.

3. King Hannah – "Davey Says". How is there still interesting new music coming out of Liverpool? Scouse duo grab a catchy melody, wrap it in Velvet Underground/Mazzy Star sonics, and ride it into a blissed-out sunset.

2. Robber Robber – "Backup Plan". Burlington, VT postpunk band take krautrock out for a spin on this five-minute blast featuring a motorik beat, melodic bass, and reckless guitar.

1. Dean Blunt, Panda Bear and Vegyn – "Downer". Genre-busting Londoner Blunt collaborates here on a hypnotic track that starts in a wash of processed guitar a la My Bloody Valentine, then adds a trip-hoppy indie beat under Panda Bear's vocal.

Two poems from my Oulipo-inspired series "Pumice Vocal" were just published in the 6th issue of TYPO from Black Scat Books. Each poem takes a vowel sound and runs with it--every word contains that sound. I'm pleased to be included in this journal: each issue not only dives deep into avant-garde history, but also carries its spirit into the future.

3. RJD2 – "Catch The Exit Door". A jangly guitar, honking ska sax and deep purple organ combine forces over a looped beat to propel this clubby track straight on to Bangersville, daddy-o.

2. Juliet Ivy – "Is It My Face?" A simple yet highly contagious indie-pop tune that somehow sounds both current and timeless and deals with the evergreen fear that no one will ever love you.
