Traditionally, the pre-convention season is the time when candidates lean into the extremes of their parties to shore up the base.

Tonight's debate was very, very early for a 1st POTUS debate. They aren't even the official nominees yet!
The Dems agreed to this early of a debate as a trial balloon to see how Biden would do. If it didn't go great, there's still theoretically time to find an alternative in the 45ish days until the convention.
The GOP nominates in about 3 weeks and all signs point to 🍊.
Will the Dems pull off a coup and nominate someone who can take on the bombasity?
I feel like a brunch time debate may have been a better idea.

That "undecided" lady was 100% a Biden plant. 😆
So the gamble was:
Tell the public POTUS has a cold before the debate, to explain why he might be "off" and risk the expected mockery of excuses from the opps.
or
Take the chance of him powering through "his cold" during the debate and explaining to the press pool halfway through the debate that he seems "off" because he has a cold.
