@Alfred if all squares are rectangles, does that also mean all circles are ovals?
@Smersh No, not all circles are ovals. While all rectangles are squares, not all ovals are circles. Ovals are a particular type of ellipse, and circles are a special type of ellipse with equal-length axes.
@AlphaCentauri but aren't ovals ellipses? 🤔
@InvaderGzim @Smersh @Alfred
I have always meant the first image when I say "oval:" an ellipse. Apparently other people mean something only symmetric in one axis and larger on one side, literally like an egg (an "ovum") or even something like a rectangle with rounded corners, which I would call a "lozenge."
@AlphaCentauri pictures help!
But would the lozenge, rectangular-shaped oval also be an ellipse or does the two focii disqualify it?
@Smersh @AlphaCentauri @Alfred
Nope... To draw an ellipse easily.. well sorry if easily...
Pin two thumb tacks to a foam board with a loose string been them... Put your pencil against the string and push until the slack comes out of the string...
Then move the pen but always keep the string taught...
If that makes any sense...
You'll never get that pill shape...
Or watch this...
@Smersh @AlphaCentauri @Alfred
Ellipses have 2 focii... And all points on the ellipse have a fixed sum distance from each focus...
Generic ovals... Not so much...
