It's entirely possible for me to believe that a guy who thought he was exempt found out he wasn't, realized he was looking at spending his life rooming with cockroaches and eating garbage, and decided that doing an hero looked better to him.
Not to mention it has the advantage of needing MANY fewer moving parts.
