Denzel thinks that representing himself in this way is going to make him more likable? This is a portrait of someone not aging well at all. He's basically letting his audience know 1) He's an egomaniac 2) He thinks awards are more important than the work itself (although that might be the enhanced paycheck he craves, which would be greed) 3) Alcoholics will always make excuses why they drink.
